‘Standing In Awe’

I was reminded of a song this week – one that has always had a special place in my heart – it’s a song about’ standing in awe’ of God – and brought back to mind certain times in my life when I have experienced that strong sense of awe.

The song speaks of God as being – “beautiful beyond description – too marvellous for words – too wonderful for comprehension – like nothing ever seen or heard” It poses the question – “who can grasp Your infinite wisdom – who can fathom the depths of Your love” – and then goes on to express the reaction provoked by these thoughts – “I stand – I stand – in awe of You – Holy God – to Whom all praise is due – I stand in awe of You”

As I reflected on the times when I had sung that song – of those special times when the words had provoked that response within me – that deepfelt awesomeness – I realised that they were special times – such experiences don’t happen all the time.

This all got me reflecting on what it really is to experience ‘awe’ – and just what creates that feeling within me – and one thing I recognised was that I have a part to play – If I want to experience this sense of awe – I need to give time and attention to the things around me – to allow that sense of wonder to be refreshed – to give myself the opportunity to know that – “strong feeling of respect or amazement – brought on by something that is beautiful or sacred”

I love this description – “We stand in awe before that which cannot be seen – we respect with every fibre of our being – that which cannot be explained” – and that can be so true – yet – awe can also be elicited by many experiences – every day – if I look for it – take the time – give myself over to the things I see and feel around me.

As someone once said – “We often think about awe in response to rare and intense events – but awe can also be found in the everyday – if we just deepen our thinking about the experience – look for patterns in nature – take a moment to think about what is vast”.

I want my life to be filled with awesome moments – special times – when my very soul is stirred – as I take in the beauty that surrounds me – as I contemplate the words from a psalm – “The whole earth is filled with awe at Your wonders – where morning dawns – where evening fades – You call forth songs of joy” -as I dwell on the awesomeness of God Himself – and His handiwork – and allow the depths of my soul to be moved.

Blessings – Lois
