‘In The Eyes Of The Beholder’

The saying – “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder” – came to me the other day – after I had been in contact with my friend in Scotland. She was talking about her experiences walking with her dogs in the snow – and sent me some beautiful pictures of the snow around where she lives.

Having recently relocated from South Africa – this was a whole new experience for her – and it was wonderful to hear her reaction – to the beauty she saw all around.

I also love to see the landscape covered in snow – it has a certain appeal – until of course you have to go out there – particularly when you need to travel – and so – for some people – the sight of all that snow can elicit the opposite feeling – and they may see anything other than beauty!

And – so it is in life in general I guess.

The way we see things is as varied as we are as individuals.

I love this quote – “We all live under the same sky – but we don’t all have the same horizon” – and that is so very true.

We are after all – individuals – having differing viewpoints – “Two people can look at the exact same thing – and see something totally different” – and there is no right or wrong in that – we simply ‘see’ – from our individual viewpoints.

This is something that I have become much more aware of – and especially on the recent spiritual journey I have embarked on.

Having spent so many years – seeking to see things through the eyes of others – I have begun to recognise – that my perception is changing – as I look through the lens of my own soul – and I am learning to do as this quote says – “Follow your soul – it knows the way”

Having said that – I am forever grateful for those who shared with me over the years – the things that they saw – those who walked with me – as I learnt to find my own path – and I love how this quote expresses that – “Everyone has their own path. Walk yours with integrity – and wish all others peace on their journey. When your paths merge – rejoice for their presence in your life. When the paths are separated – return to the wholeness of yourself. Give thanks for the footprints left on your soul – and embrace the time – to journey on your own”

So – as I continue to ponder – recognising – and accepting – how very different my perceptions may be – to those of others – it becomes clear to me that – “It’s not what you look at that matters – it’s what you see” – and that leaves me full of anticipation – and a determination – to continue to find beauty – in all that I see – and to accept – that others may view things differently – but that is okay – and simply leaves me free to appreciate things in my own way.

Blessings – Lois

  1. I’ve had a few conversations in the past few days about the different stories we tell ourselves so that we all view situations in a different way, or have different memories about what happened.
