‘The Lens I Look Through’

A visit to the optician this week – made me feel so grateful that I have access to such technology – and don’t have to go through life without corrective lenses – which enable me to see so much better.

Not only am I short sighted – but have quite a severe prism – resulting in double vision.

The optician spent a long time – choosing the right lens – which definitely transforms the way I see things.

Of course – the way I see things – is not confined to my physical eyesight – but also – the view I have of the world – “The lens we choose – transforms the way we look at things”.

I guess most of us – look at things – through different lenses – depending on our upbringing – and experiences. Over time – our ‘view’ will likely change – as life shapes us.

This can make it difficult to understand others.

If I presume that everyone sees the same as I do – then I will be expecting them to see – and react to things – in the same way. “Two people can look at the same thing – and see something totally different”

And so – I need to try to understand – the type of lens others are looking through.

“We all look at the world through the lens created by our experiences. In order to really understand someone’s issues – you have to figure out – what shaped their lens”.

It’s interesting how our viewpoint can change. I know that the lens through which I now see the world has changed over the years.

I was taught to see things in a certain way. In a sense I looked at the world – and others – through the lenses I was given – but over time – those lenses were limiting my view – and I needed to update them.

I like the way someone expressed it here – “When you look through a lens of past experiences – it can be hard to see what’s right in front of you. But once you see things through a lens of possibility – you’ll wonder why you didn’t see it sooner”.

Changing the lenses through which I see the world – is for me an ongoing experience. Just as I need to regularly check – and update – my physical eyesight – so I need to keep a check on my – ‘spiritual eyesight – and how that affects the way I view both myself – and others.

This quote is so important – “When I changed my lens – and put one in that sees the best in all human beings – it changed the way – that I experienced the world”

I want to always choose the lenses I wear – carefully – not only enabling me to see the best in others – but to be constantly aware of the possibilities – that abound in my life – every day.

Blessings – Lois
