‘The Soul Thrives in Mystery’

More and more these days – I find myself thinking about life.

It may have something to do with the fact that I am getting older – looking back on my life – as well as experiencing the loss of many – who were once a part of my life too.

And so – I am drawn to the writings – and podcasts – of others – as they share their thoughts.

This quote captured my imagination the other day – “Life isn’t meant to be figured out – it’s meant to be experienced” or – put another way – “Life is not a problem to be solved – but a reality to be experienced”.

Looking back – I find that I have spent much of my life – trying to figure things out – to understand – looking for the meaning in life – rather than simply enjoying living my life.

Wanting to be certain – and feeling that I needed to know – have everything worked out – but – I love how this writer put it – “People who’ve had any genuine spiritual experience – always know – that they don’t know”.

And I have found that so true – as I let go of so many questions – and simply allow my soul to find it’s way. At the same time – accepting the great mysteries – that feed my soul.

Beginning to understand – that – “The mind craves certainty – but the soul craves mystery” – or – to quote again – “The soul thrives in mystery – not certainty”

I love that thought – for it’s so important that my soul thrives – and by letting go of the – ‘need to know’ – the more I give my soul the chance to do that – in the mystery of – ‘what I don’t know’.

I was interested in reading this extract from Richard Rohr –

“This life journey has led me to love mystery – and not feel the need to change it – or make it un-mysterious. This has put me at odds with many other believers I know – who seem to need explanations for everything.”

It’s not an easy thing – to let go of the need to figure things out – or to feel there is a problem to solve – and – to choose to simply experience – and live life – with all of it’s mysteries.

But – that is what I choose to do – and to follow this advice given here – “Do not grow old – no matter how long you live. Never cease to stand like curious children – before the great mystery – into which we were born”.

And – so – I continue – to remain curious – yet – not seeking to solve the mysteries – but to relax – and experience this life that I am blessed to have been given.

Blessings – Lois
