‘A Life Well Lived’

This week we travelled up to Scotland – to remember – and honour – the life of my brother.

We joined with many – who had walked with him – and known him – over the years. And as we all felt his loss – and experienced different levels of grief – we were united – as we dwelt on a life well lived.

And although we would have loved his life to be longer – I find comfort in this quote – that – “Life – if well lived – is long enough”.

Looking back on his life – it was evident that he had lived well – and lived a full and varied life – impacting the lives of so many others.

As I listened to tributes – brought by family and friends – I was reminded that – “The best measure of a life well lived – has less to do with the number of years we live – or by our accomplishments – but more to do with how other’s lives were lovingly touched by our presence”.

And we were made aware of that – as his life was honoured in those memories – and also – of how – “A well lived life – is a gift to those you leave behind” – a gift that lingers on – in the legacy left behind.

To quote from a small part of his son’s tribute – “So today – we honour him – not just for the years he gave us – but for the legacy of faith he leaves behind. We remember the laughter – the wisdom – the quiet strength. We remember the way he made us feel safe – the way he made us feel seen” – – “So let us grieve – but not as those without hope. Let us remember – but not with despair. Let us live – carrying forward the light he left behind”.

Pondering on my brothers life – and how he lived it well – causes me to reflect on my own life – and I came across this quote – that seemed to convey some of my thoughts – “How much longer will I live? – Only one thing seems clear to me. Every day should be well lived. What a simple truth! Still – it is worthy of my attention”.

And so – I vow – to live each day well – focusing – not on the length of my life – but on those things that enrich the lives of others – on the love – laughter – wisdom – and strength – that I seek to impart each day.

Blessings – Lois
