‘The Songs That I Sing’

At a recent wedding anniversary celebration – each guest was given an envelope – with a card inside – inscribed with this quote from C S Lewis – “A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart – and can sing it back to you – when you have forgotten the words”.

It struck me as a beautiful sentiment – yet – at the same time – caused me to ponder on the songs that my heart sings – and to realise that those songs change with time.

Of course – a close friend would know the song that my heart is singing – even when that song has changed – and – even if that song was different from their own – could remind me – of the words I sang.

I know that the songs I sang years ago – have changed – for as the rhythm of my life has changed – it has changed me – causing me to dance to a new beat – for – as someone put it here – “When the rhythm of life changes – dance to the new beat”

As I walk through life – I have found that I often need to – almost ‘rewrite’ – the lyrics of the song that I sing – adapting to that new rhythm – for – “Life is a song – it’s up to you – and your heart – to write the lyrics”.

I love it that even though the lyrics may have changed – I still dance – with the same joy in my heart and soul.

For – “When I started to dance to my own rhythm – and found my own beat – the sound got louder in my heart – and the music within me became the soundtrack of my life – rather than the one dictated by the outside”.

I have to admit – that it’s not always easy to ‘learn a new dance’ – or to – ‘sing a different song’ – to move out of step – and at times to feel misunderstood.

But – “Freedom – is learning to dance to the rhythm of your own heart – even if it is out of sync with the ones you love”.

For me – it has become very important – to be true to myself – to listen to the beat of my own heart – and dance to it – and to move – to the music of my own soul.

And of course – I am so grateful – for those who know the song that I sing – and are always there to sing it back to me – if I do forget the words.

Blessings – Lois
