‘Facing Forward’

On one of my recent walks – along the country roads – I passed a young lady – pushing her young child in a pushchair. I noted that the child was sitting facing her mother – and for some reason this set my mind on a train of thought – as I pondered on the merits of – ‘forward facing’ – or ‘backward facing’ travel.

Of course – most modes of transportation are forward facing – our cars – buses etc. for example. Whenever I travel by train however – I always make sure that I have – if at all possible – a forward facing seat.

I like to see where I am going – but at the same time – I’m living in the moment – seeing what’s in front of me – as my journey unfolds.

And – I just love that thought – “Looking forward – but staying in the moment”. It encapsulates how I want to live my life – with that anticipation for the future – but also the enjoyment of the ‘now’.

If I sit facing backwards – I miss out – for in a sense I am seeing the past – observing where I have travelled – instead of seeing what is to come. As someone said – “It’s better to look ahead and prepare – than to look back and regret”.

There are times of course when it’s interesting to look back – but – in doing so – I need to guard my heart and mind. There is so much to be grateful for – and to hold onto – but also things that I need to let go of – and simply move forward.

That for me is what I intend to do – how I intend to live – “Looking forward to the future – and feeling grateful for the past”

It’s important for me though – to remind myself to – ‘stay’ in the moment – to – ‘be’ in the moment – even as I anticipate where my journey might be taking me.

Life after all – is a journey – a moving forward – not to be rushed – but to be entered into fully – facing forward – eyes on what is ahead – but my heart in the moment.

To quote – “Live today facing forward – with your back on yesterday – your eyes on tomorrow – and your head and heart in the moment”.
