‘Change Of Purpose’

Over the past few weeks one of the rooms in our house has undergone a change. It’s been a change of – ‘purpose’ – a change of – ‘use’.

It’s something that we often do in life – as our situations change – or maybe we even change our location – we change things.

And we understand that things do not remain the same – as new scenarios appear on the horizon of our lives.

And so of course it can be for ourselves – not simply our surroundings.

As I look back on my life – I see so many times when ‘my purpose’ changed – as I moved on from being just a daughter – into adulthood – creating my own life – becoming a wife – and then a mother – my purpose becoming so much wider.

However – a quote I came across caused me to question – whether my ‘purpose’ changes – or just the ‘role’ – that I play. The quote says “Our roles may change with the seasons of our life – but – our purpose never changes”

I quite liked that thought -and could clearly see that – it was in the ‘roles’ that I played – that I fulfilled my ‘purpose’. So – I began to ponder on my ‘purpose’ – seeking to define just what that might be – and realised that it really was quite simple – as someone here said – “Your purpose in life – is to be You”

And I love that thought.

I don’t need to change ‘who I am’ – I am the person God created me to be – with all the attributes given to me – full of so many possibilities – and – as I move through the changes of life – there are so many varied opportunities – so many roles to play – to live out my ‘purpose’.

I know that I have a tendency to underestimate my worth – to see ‘purpose’ – in simply ‘being me’.

I guess there have been times when I have felt that I needed to change – to be the person others expected me to be – or – to want to change – to be like someone else – whose worth I saw as greater than my own.

But – I am understanding more and more – that I am unique – and as such should do as this quote says and – “never change your originality for the sake of others – because no one can play your role better than you” – and so – whatever my role may be – however much that might change – my purpose remains the same – as I continue to stay true to myself.

  1. That’s a good way of viewing our purpose. I see my purpose as using my creativity to learn about and illuminate the world. I think all of our purposes are about that but we just have unique talents to help us do it, so not so different from just being who we are.
