‘The Gift Of Yourself’

The long summer holidays are ending – those times spent in so many varied ways – yet – almost always – including spending time with family and friends – and – that for me is what makes those times so special.

While chatting with a friend – who had played host to a number of visitors during this time – a comment she made really stuck with me – she said that – ” each one had left the gift of themselves behind”.

I thought that was beautiful – and spoke the truth of this quote – “The time we spend with each other – is the ultimate gift we can give to one another”

These people chose to spend time with their family and friends – and in so doing gave the greatest gift that they could – they gave of their time – and – to quote – “The greatest gift you can give to someone is your time – because – when you give your time – you are giving a portion of your life – that you will never get back”.

I guess it’s easy to underestimate just how important that can be – simply to give time – to be there – giving of yourself.

For – “You give but little when you give of your possessions – it is when you give of yourself – that you truly give”.

It was interesting to recognise just what each person had left behind – as my friend shared how one had left great advise and wisdom – which they had shared with her – another had created the beginnings of a garden – others had been company on long walks – simply sharing life together.

And of course – that is really what ‘giving of ourselves’ is all about – it’s the giving of our honest selves – whatever that may be – sharing whoever we are – giving that ‘truest self’ – using our ‘gifts’ – to help – support – and enrich the lives of others.

As William Shakespeare once said – “The meaning of life is to find your gift – the purpose of life is to give it away”.

It is so true I find – that as I begin to accept more and more – that I do have something to offer – be that – time – a listening ear – practical help – or whatever – by giving that to others – I give them the greatest gift that anyone can give.

So – as I challenge myself yet again – to recognise the importance of ‘giving of myself’ – I am also very aware of the many gifts that I myself receive – from those who give themselves so freely to me – enriching my life – in so many ways – so – thank you all.

Blessings Lois
