‘Be Still My Soul’

still 1The words I found going round in my mind this morning were ‘Be still and know that I am God’. These words I recognised from a song – sung a long long time ago and also as the words from a psalm.

My first thoughts were of the need to quiet ourselves among the business of life – of the value of spending time in a quiet space – of simply ‘being still’.

However as I began to reflect I recognised that there was far more to it than that. Looking at the context of the psalm and when those words were written – in the middle of disruption and battle – helps me to realise that this speaks more of a ‘quieting of the soul’ – of resting – in spite of what is happening around me – in spite of what may be difficult in my life – or happening in the world around me – my soul can be still – and I can be assured and confident in Who God is. The words of another old hymn remind me of this – reassuring me that He is with me all the way – that He guides the future – as He has the past – and He is in control.still 4

However much I don’t understand – I rest on my faith and trust in Him – that He is God – and He is with me.still 3

A more modern song by Bethel music puts it simply  ‘Let go my soul – and trust in Him’

So – I still my soul – and in the midst of my worries – my fears – even my doubt at times – I rest with Him – recognise Him for Who He is – bow to His wisdom – greatness and most of all embrace His love.
